Leaving Auckland

Today was a test!  Seems like everyday we have some sort of issue.  Today it was renting the car and driving on the opposite side, without proper maps.  Cliff was filled with angst that he couldn't follow our route, and I was filled with angst about driving on the opposite side of the road.  It is truly amazing how programmed we are to our side of the road.

I actually did make a turn and was heading up the wrong side seeing the oncoming cars - had a few choice word for that.  We escaped unscathed!  Then we tried the GARMIN with Australian/New Zealand maps loaded.  It took a while to figure it all out only to find after we stopped for lunch, that nothing much happened with the GARMIN.  I have a HELP message into technical support.

We arrived at a town called  Rotorua which is a  touristy sight, and the only reason we came was to learn something of the Maori culture, the indigenous people of NZ.  There are thermal bathes here smell of sulphur and are most unpleasant to our olfactory senses.   We did visit a Maori village that sits on top of thermal pools and saw how they lived.  Not very well believe me.  The host of our hotel assured me they are happy and contented with their lot in life.

Forgot to mention that this week-end is a huge Reggae concert with some of Bob Marley's offspring.  The town is jumping!  We are heading out tomorrow to calmer scenes around Hawkes Bay.
And our adventure continues.  I am so disappointed we are unable to attach photos.

  1. You know that John and I would have had to go to the concert!! I'm glad you are having a good time despite your car and travel dilemmas. Much Love! Natalie has a bit of a cold :(
